Anne had an idea to raise money for a disease. This is a place for us to gather and share ideas, goals, and progress in raising money to donate to the ALS Association in honor of Jean Stockwell, Shannon's grandmother.

This community is meant to be sort of like the information hub, the brain, where we can send and recieve messages, coordinate activities, and make plans.

Because this is within our group of friends and raising money and getting together requires being in touch outside of livejournal, this community is by invitation/request only, so people we know and can get in contact with in person. I (Heather) am sorry if this is a problem, if it turns out to be a major issue, we can change it.

What is ALS?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually lead to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. Yet, through it all, for the vast majority of people, their minds remain unaffected.
